2018 Prince Claus Laureates With Members Of The Royal Family

2018 Prince Claus Laureates with the Royal Family, Chair of the Board, and Director of the Prince Claus Fund

On 6 December 2018, in a ceremony at the Royal Palace Amsterdam, HRH Prince Constantijn of the Netherlands presented seven Prince Claus Awards for outstanding achievement in the field of culture and development. Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima and their Royal Highnesses Princess Beatrix and Princess Mabel of the Netherlands were in attendance.

HRH Prince Constantijn, Chair of the Board of the Prince Claus Fund, presented the Principal Prince Claus Award to Market Photo Workshop (training institute and cultural platform, South Africa) and presented Prince Claus Awards to Adong Judith (playwright, film & theatre-maker, Uganda), Marwa al-Sabouni (architect, Syria), Kidlat Tahimik (artist & filmmaker, Philippines), Eka Kurniawan (author, Indonesia), O Menelick 2º Ato (independent journalism & cultural platform, Brazil), and our first Next Generation Laureate Dada Masilo (dancer & choreographer, South Africa). The Prince Claus Awards Ceremony included a special performance choreographed and performed by Dada Masilo.  

All seven Prince Claus Laureates shared their stories in a public event on 5 December at the Compagnietheater in Amsterdam, Louder than Words.

About the Prince Claus Awards

All over the world there are extraordinary people active in the cultural field, many are working in areas where cultural expression faces challenges. Each year the Prince Claus Fund honours a select group of these individuals and organisations whose excellent work is having a positive impact on their societies. As part of the Prince Claus Fund’s focus on developing and supporting activities with and for young people (ages 15 – 35) a new, Next Generation Prince Claus Award was introduced this year for the first time. The Next Generation Prince Claus Award, honours an outstanding creative initiative that contributes positively to the lives and possibilities of young people.

All 2018 Prince Claus Laureates will also be honoured at ceremonies in their home countries in the coming months.
