The project Layar Berkembang, Kemudi Diputar (The Sail is on Board, the Steering Wheel is Rotated) proposed by the young collective Gulung Tukar seeks to create cultural spaces by and for young people to critically engage with the arts. The project, which consists of a range of different activities that together form a curated biennale style programme, takes place in Tulungagung, East Java, which is a culturally marginalised area of Indonesia. The area has seen a rise in fundamental Islam, and the collective aim to address this by engaging young people in critical reflection on society through their programming.
