Invisible Borders Road Trip Project 2012

Crossing Borders in Africa

Political complexities and language barriers often generate misconceptions between people who live on either side of a border. For many countries in Africa, these conditions as well as limited mobility, contribute to the lack of interaction and understanding between nations.

The Invisible Borders Road Trip aims to inspire a movement towards Trans-African exchange. Ten artists from Mozambique, Mali, Ghana, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Congo and Nigeria will travel over 13,000 km in 49 days, from Lagos, Nigeria to Lubumbashi, DRC. The diverse group of participating artists will develop artworks that explore their interactions with each other and the complex countries they visit. They are dedicated to the creation of art works that portray the dynamism, richness, as well as the contradictions within the various modes of existence of African people.

The trip is connected to the 'Rencontres Picha', the biennale of Arts of Lubumbashi (DRC).

The artists include: Mozambique (Mario Macilau), Sudan (Ala Kheir), Ghana (to be confirmed), Mali (Fatoumata Diabete) and Nigeria. The project is organized in collaboration with Roncontres PIcha (The Biennale of Arts) of Lubumbashi (curator Elvira Dyangani-Ose, President Sammy Baloji, Director Patrick Mudekereza). On the side of Invisible Borders, the Artistic Director and over all coordinator is Emeka Okereke and assisted by Amaize Ojeikere (secretary) Anna Djigo (Director of public Relations), Kemi Akin-Nibosun (Project Assistant) and Jumoke Sanwo (Head of Cooperate Affairs).
