3-Dimensional Virtual Museum in Palestine
On 25 July 2011 the Three-Dimensional Virtual Museum (3DVM) project of the Birzeit University Museum was launched. The project, supported by the Prince Claus Fund, is a 3 dimensional virtual space that presents an interactive representation of the gallery space at the Birzeit University Museum. The 3DVM aims to provide a medium for experimentation in the fields of curation and exhibition space-design, as well as a venue for the interactive display of exhibitions where users can navigate the space online and discuss the exhibitions on display through common social networks.
The 3DVM is expected to be of great importance in Palestine, where restriction of movement, checkpoints and siege, block mobility and exchange are the reality of everyday life. In this environment, and with the paucity in the number of professionally run galleries or museums, a 3D Virtual Art Space will stand as a substitute, offering visitors wherever they are, in cities, villages or refugee camps, the opportunity to experience going online to a gallery or museum.
In April 2011 Christa Meindersma, director of the Prince Claus Fund, and Mette Gratama van Andel, coordinator communications travelled to Palestine and met with Inas Yassin and Vera Tamari, current and former director of The Ethnographic & Art Museum and The Virtual Gallery. In a presentation Yassin and Tamari showed the technical possibilities of the 3DVM. The representatives of the Prince Claus Fund were impressed and feel the online virtual gallery triggers the development of Palestinian art in making an online connection with the rest of the world which is important to overcome the daily reality of Palestinian mobility issues.
"3DVM will help people develop their creative and analytical skill"

Background information
Birzeit University
The 3DVM is a project of Birzeit University, the first institution of higher education to be established in Palestine (1924). In addition to providing students with the opportunity to realize their academic aspirations, the University encourages its students to be productive citizens and active members of their community. Birzeit University is a non-profit institution that aims at providing a cultural and educational service for the Palestinian society in particular, and the Arab and international society in general.
The Virtual Gallery
More specifically, the 3DVM was initiated by the Birzeit University Museum and The Virtual Gallery. The Ethnographic and Art Museum is a pioneering art space, that promotes visual arts within the Palestinian community through various Exhibitions, Training and Education programs. The Virtual Gallery, which was added to the museum in 2005, is a website dedicated for the promotion of Palestinian contemporary art. The website is both an information and a pedagogic tool and The Virtual Gallery provides educational courses on contemporary visual arts. Published, both in Arabic and English, it has regular features such as "Exhibitions", "Artist of the Month", and its extensive "Electronic Library" (9000 digitized images). To many users in Palestine, the Arab region and the wider world, it has become a major reference on the thriving Palestinian visual art scene.
About an online gallery in Palestine
Former director Vera Tamari, who is still very much involved with the museum and gallery, was inspired by the potential for online exchange between Palestinians artists and artists all over the world in an area where movement is restricted. Before she started working on Birzeit’s virtual art space, Tamari encouraged her students to use the internet as a resource in researching art and to take virtual tours of museum galleries. The capacity of cultural exchange through the web was a great inspiration for Tamari’s work for The Virtual Gallery.
