In Memorium: Robert Loder (1934 – 2017)

The Prince Claus Fund was greatly saddened by the news that Robert Loder has passed away.

For the past 15 years, Mr Loder has been a faithful friend and advisor to the Prince Claus Fund. The Triangle Network (formerly the Triangle Arts Trust – TAT) an organization Loder co-founded in 1982, was considered an exemplary model for the Fund’s own Network Partnership Programme. TAT was one of the Fund’s first network partners from 2002-2005. Like the Prince Claus Fund, the Triangle Network helps to support local culture and cultural infrastructure by encouraging exchange and independent efforts by individuals and local organisations. As the Fund was establishing its own Network of cultural organisations, Loder was instrumental in guiding the Fund’s thoughts. He could draw on Triangle’s more than 20 years of experience fostering young and emerging artists through workshops, residencies, exhibitions and exchange.

Loder was a British businessman with a classical education, who became an art patron with an independent mind. Working for the Anglo American Corporation in southern Africa in the early 1960’s, he helped run Union Artists, a black theatre group that performed for mixed audiences, and in 1959 in Apartheid South Africa, he founded the African Arts Trust to assist black artists. On his return to London, Loder became treasurer, then chairman, of the Institute of Contemporary Arts.

In the words of Alessio Antoniolli, Director of Triangle Network, “Robert’s dynamic and indefatigable commitment to artists and the belief that they should lead the development of their own work…” has made an “immense contribution…to arts on a truly global scale.”

His presence will be sorely missed.
