Peace Niche/ T2F receives Prince Claus Award in Karachi

On 5 February, Mahenaz Mahmud, former Chair of Peace Niche/ The Second Floor (T2F), received the 2016 Prince Claus Award from Her Excellency Jeannette Seppen, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Pakistan, at T2F. The award ceremony was part of a full-day curated event, including Outdoor art activities, dance and musical performances and key note speeches by Her Excellency Jeannette Seppen and Khalid Mahmood, Chair of PeaceNiche/The Second Floor (T2F).

PeaceNiche | The Second Floor (T2F) (2007, Karachi), a not-for-profit organisation founded by Sabeen Mahmud (1974-2015), is an interdisciplinary space that promotes democratic discourse and conflict resolution through intellectual and cultural engagement. Its flagship project T2F is one of the few community spaces for open dialogue; it features a café and bookshop and hosts a packed agenda ranging from writer meet-ups to performing arts to open mic nights.

According to the Prince Claus Fund Committee Report, ‘T2F is awarded for its courageous continuation of what should be normal civic activities; for promoting and enabling democratic discourse, progressive thought and critical debate in an increasingly polarised society; for creating a haven for tolerance, welcoming all shades of opinion within an overall framework of peace and secularism; for stimulating artistic expression in a broad spectrum of disciplines and encouraging experimentation that challenges local conventions; for mentoring and providing a supportive platform for younger generations to exercise their talents and opinions.’
