Why is culture so important?

We all take culture for granted sometimes. A movie, a concert, a play, a museum, a novel - culture is part of our lives. But in many places, access to culture can be difficult and being creative faces challenges. The obstacles may range from a lack of resources, to censorship, to violence and war.

For more than 20 years, the Prince Claus Fund has supported artists, critical thinkers, heritage rescuers, and cultural organisations, particularly where cultural expression is difficult. Think, for example, of a film festival for refugees in the remote regions of Western Sahara, or a theatre group that tours conflicted regions in Iraq, or a youth orchestra that plays instruments they made of garbage recycled from the nearby landfill. These are the projects and people we support.

The world is rapidly becoming more complex, more intertwined and at the same time more fractured. The need for open cultural exchange and understanding has never been more urgent.

Art has the capacity to make people think.

Dialogue has the potential to help people understand.

Culture has the power to change societies.

And at the Prince Claus Fund, we work to make all this possible. But we don’t do it alone. We engage with partners across disciplines and from regions around the world. We foster connections. We also ask critical questions. And we listen.

And we want to hear from you.

Tell us why culture is important to you
