Meet Ayu Utami in the Tolhuistuin

On Friday evening 25 May Chris Keulemans, director of the Tolhuistuin, interviewed 2000 Prince Claus laureate Ayu Utami as part of the International Art Programme Amsterdam. Around 100 people attended the event.

Ayu talked about the current political and religious situation in her home country Indonesia and her mysterious novel The Number Fu. She related about the tensions between monotheism, militarism and modernism which occurs in present day Indonesia. The number Fu illustrates the changes that are taking place in the Indonesian society and is recently translated in Dutch by De Geus/Oxfam Novib. For her innovative work Ayu Utami received in 2000, as the youngest laureate ever, a Prince Claus Award.

Her performance was part of the International Art Programme, set up by the Prince Claus Fund together with the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts.

From the jury report of the Prince Claus Awards Committee (2000):

“The youngest prize winner is Ayu Utami (1968, Bogor, Indonesia), author. She writes about such matters as sex and the contacts between religions in her novel and essays in an uncommon way for Indonesia. Her tolerance and openness offer a balance to conservative streams. She makes a difference in the present period of Indonesian history.”
