Apichatpong Weerasethakul receives Prince Claus Award in Bangkok

On Tuesday 13 June, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands HE Mr. Karel Hartogh presented the Principal Prince Claus Award to Apichatpong Weerasethakul at the Ambassador’s residence in Bangkok. Apichatpong Weerasethakul (1970, Khon Kaen) is an artist and a leader of Thailand’s independent cinema movement.

In his speech,  HE Ambassador Karel Hartogh reflected on the ceremony as a special occasion: “I am saying ‘special’ as this is a truly special occasion. Our Embassy in Bangkok is very lucky and honoured that Khun Apichatpong was chosen by the Prince Claus Awards Committee as last year’s Principal Prince Claus Laureate for his extraordinary achievements, which make him the first Thai Prince Claus Laureate.”

Furthermore, HE Ambassador Karel Hartogh welcomed the decision of the Prince Claus Awards Committee to select Weerasethakul as the Principal Prince Claus Laureate. He praised Weerasethakul’s “masterpiece of 2009”, A Letter to Uncle Boonmee, which was screened during the event.

The Ambassador also quoted the Awards Committee, stating, “The committee awarded himfor the visual richness, spiritual lyricism and intellectual depth of his provocative works, for his subtle yet powerful examination of the Thai realities that resonate beyond his own society, and for inspiring others by remaining uncompromisingly true to his own vision and principles”.

The Prince Claus Fund’s Programme Coordinator Awards Fariba Derakhshani also spoke about the role of the Prince Claus Awards to ‘acknowledge the exceptional work of people who make a real difference.’
