Prince Claus Fund at TEFAF Maastricht Fair 2017

As a partner of The European Fine Art Foundation (TEFAF), the Prince Claus Fund will have a visual presence at the art fair, starting 10 March 2017. TEFAF has supported the Fund’s Cultural Emergency Response programme (CER) since 2008, in order to give urgent help when heritage is under imminent threat from natural or man-made disasters.

Our latest collaboration with TEFAF focused on Yemen, a country which has been suffering from a simmering civil war for more than a decade. As a result, many museums and cultural sites in the area have already been destroyed or heavily damaged. An irreplaceable record of history has been lost.

Salvaging and documenting the ATAQ Museum collection in Yemen.

The ATAQ museum is located about 500 km east of Aden in southern Yemen and offers an invaluable source of information about the region’s rich culture and history, with a sizeable collection of artefacts dating back to the pre-Islamic period. ATAQ’s whole collection was potentially at risk. Nearly all three thousand of its artefacts were particularly vulnerable. Undocumented and housed in two unguarded storage rooms about 400 meters away from the museum, they required urgent action.

Thanks to the collaboration between TEFAF, The Prince Claus Fund and local partners, the inscriptions, sculptures, bronze and silver coins, bronze artefacts and plaques that formed the collection have been documented and transferred to safe storage. Despite the fact that the ATAQ Museum has been closed for several years, due to this successful collaboration it has the potential to once again become a valuable center information about the pre- Islamic period in southern Arabia. Preserving its collection is a gift to future generations.
