Tefaf has supported the Cultural Emergency Response programme of the Prince Claus Fund since 2008.

TEFAF and the Prince Claus Fund are convinced of the importance to save art and cultural heritage after disaster or conflict. Culture and heritage provide a sense of belonging, identity and continuity which are crucial when rebuilding a community.

For example, The Prince Claus Fund and Tefaf assisted the Qiang, one of the oldest cultural minorities in China, with the emergency conservation of one of the few remaining ancient watchtowers that is still in use. With TEFAF’s support, the Prince Claus Fund has been able to save ancient rock art in Niger from destruction by armed rebels, restore a unique archive of Turkish writer Aziz Nesin after severe flooding, rehabilitate the only gaucho museum in Argentina damaged by torrential rains, carry out emergency repairs to one of the most important temples in Bhutan damaged by earthquakes, help Burmese monks to excavate holy relics from a monastery in Burma buried under a mudslide and support the Qiang in taking rapid temporary measures to protect the structure of the ancient watchtower of A’er.

"Prince Claus Fund symbolises the importance of art and culture"

Patrick van Maris van Dijk, The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF)

CER provides rapid and effective emergency relief for cultural heritage damaged or destroyed by man-made or natural disasters. Launched in 2003 in reaction to the looting and demolition of artworks from the National Museum of Iraq, CER believes that rescuing cultural heritage provides hope and consolation to affected communities and thereby contributes to restoring human dignity, continuity and a sense of identity. Culture is a basic need and cultural emergency relief should therefore be an integral part of humanitarian aid.
