Prince Claus Awards 2016 Beirut Ceremony: speech Joumana El Zein

Speech by Joumana El Zein Khoury, director of the Prince Claus Fund on the occasion of the presentation of the 2016 Prince Claus Award to Kamal Mouzawak in Beirut on 13 February 2017.

Chargé d’Affaires Mr. Han-Maurits Schaapveld, guests, friends.  We are here to honour Kamal Mouzawak.

For the Non-Arabic speakers, the name ‘Kamal’ means ‘perfection’. And in this case, the man comes pretty close.

For most of you, Kamal will need no introduction. He has been a towering figure in Beirut food circles for a long time, with his tireless promotion of authentic Lebanese cuisine in all its diversity.

Food. So essential to life.

In our busy, pressured, modern world, we tend to take it for granted.

But Kamal never has. He understands the great value of preserving culinary traditions, of promoting local production, of careful, loving preparation and appreciative consumption.

Food is culture, and culture can be communicated and understood through food.

Food brings people together. With Lebanon’s often conflicted history, bringing people together in peaceful sharing is a gift, an act of humanity.

In Kamal’s career of food activism he has done that and more. He has promoted small-scale and organic farming. He has revived traditions of hospitality in ways that have emphasized quality and drawn in happy visitors from far and wide, introducing them to the delights of rural Lebanon. He has inspired reconciliation and respect for disparate communities. He has highlighted the importance of protecting the environment. And he is driving social change through food movements, both locally and internationally.

Indeed, Kamal represents many of the values that the Prince Claus Fund stands for. Thank you Kamal for all that you do- it is an honour to be here to honour you.
