Prince Claus Awards 2016 beirut ceremony: speech HM Schaapveld

Speech by Han-Maurits Schaapveld, Chargé d’Affaires  on the occasion of the presentation of the 2016 Prince Claus Award to Kamal Mouzawak in Beirut on 13 February 2017.

Dear friends of culture and development. It’s a true pleasure to see you all here, in Beirut.

I would like to express a particular welcome to His Excellency Ghatas Khoury, the minister of culture, to the important donors of the Prince Claus Fund, to mr. Henk Pröpper, chairman of the board and to Mrs. Joumana el Zein Khoury, director of the Prince Claus Fund.

It is wonderful to be here in Tawlet, where Kamal Mouzawak always brings people together around a common aim. Tawlet is more than a restaurant; it symbolizes how to look for the similarities behind our differences. Kamal’s passion for the Lebanese cuisine and sustainable food production has become a dynamic agency for human well-being and social development. We can rightfully call him a ‘food-visionary’. Kamal bridges ethnic, religious, political and social divisions through the shared human need and enjoyment of food.

The Netherlands and Lebanon share many similarities. We are two small countries, both thriving on diversity, open mindedness and trade. We should continue emphasizing our similarities and creating bridges from one culture to another. This we can do amongst other things by culture, dance and art. The Netherlands Embassy has a long tradition of supporting Lebanese arts, design, dance and culture as well as exchanges in these fields with Dutch creators. Kamal exactly embodies the power of culture through his inspirational work.

His initiatives, Beirut’s first organic farmers’ market Souk El Tayeb, this restaurant Tawlet and the many other programs he initiated are showcases for Lebanon’s diversity. Kamal is an ambassador of all traditions and identities through the Lebanese cuisine.

“Make food not war”, is the change Kamal Mouzawak works for every day. In his own words:

Food perpetuates life, in a positive, constructive, nourishing way. So food is all about life: saving it, perpetuating it and feeding it.

Thank you Kamal, for creating a recipe to bridge communities in Lebanon and to show this toe the rest of the world.

Thank you all again very much for being here. I wish you all an enjoyable lunch after the speeches and give the microphone to his Excellency the minister.

Check against delivery.
