An evening with Tate’s Inti Guerrero

location:Prince Claus Fund Gallery
address:Herengracht 603, Amsterdam
date:31.03.2017
end date:31.03.2017
time:from 19:15 till 20:30

The Prince Claus Fund, in collaboration with the Mondriaan Fund, are delighted to present a talk by Inti Guerrero, the Estrellita B. Brodsky Adjunct Curator of Latin American Art at the Tate in London, and curator of the 38th edition of EVA International – Ireland’s Biennial in Limerick in 2018.

‘Speculative art history, and other forms of periodisation through curating’ public talk by Inti Guerrero

Inti Guerrero will discuss the possibilities and limitations of curating an exhibition when proposing speculative art histories. He will share his views on the new ‘global’ hanging at Tate, and the exhibition Chronicles of Interventions, which he curated with Shoair Mavlian at Tate Modern and TEOR/éTica (Costa Rica, 2014); a show based on a 1984 installation/exhibition by artist collective Group Material which pioneered experimental forms of historical periodisation through curating.

Days before the Brexit referendum, Tate Modern unveiled its new wing named the Switch House. The London museum took this occasion to rehang its international collection within various experimental exhibition genres, which further dislocate the Western European-American canon of art history; advocating for dialogues of internationalism, of great pertinence in today’s rise of nationalisms.

The Estrellita B. Brodsky Adjunct Curator of Latin American Art post is part of Tate’s wish to focus on further developing the representation of art from Latin America in Tate’s collection. This post forms part of a commitment to develop Tate’s knowledge and expertise in Latin American art and Guerrero is the fourth such curator at Tate (following Cuauhtémoc Medina, Julieta González and José Roca), working with Tate’s Latin American Acquisitions Committee and in collaboration with curators at Tate.

As part of his independent research Inti Guerrero will visit the Netherlands as guest in the Mondriaan Fund visitors program between 27 and 30 March 2017. With a view to promoting art from the Netherlands abroad, the Mondriaan Fund organizes special visitors programs for foreign visual art professionals. Visitors programs are organized for curators and other professionals to offer greater insight into contemporary visual arts from the Netherlands and to strengthen international ties and promote the exchange of ideas.
