La Silla Vacía receives Prince Claus Award in Colombia

On Thursday 4 May, the Dutch Embassy to Colombia hosted the talk "What can journalism learn from the arts?" as part of the 2016 Prince Claus Award celebration honouring La Silla Vacía. Speakers included writer Juan Esteban Constaín, the director of the journalism awards Simón Bolívar, audio-visual artist Fernando Arias, and the director of La Silla Vacía, Juanita León.

The conversation took place at the residence of the Dutch Ambassador HE Jeroen Roodenburg as part of a celebration of La Silla Vacía’s contributions to citizenship and democracy in Colombia. The Prince Claus Awards recognise artists and organisations from Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Asia carrying out important work in the field of culture and development. The awards committee stated that La Silla Vacía "encourages citizen participation in national discourse, giving everyone a voice and helping to build an informed community."

HE Ambassador of the Netherlands Jeroen Roodenburg mentioned: "The work of media such as La Silla Vacía to reach the public… is of vital importance for the construction of a sustainable peace in Colombia.”

In his speech, HE Ambassador Jeroen Roodenburg made a reference to a report by Free Press Unlimited in which 2016 was registered as the lowest level press freedom in 13 years: “countries that were formerly known as democracies have now changed their attitude towards greater censorship and repression of media.”

Further on, he emphasised: “for the construction of a sustainable peace, journalism has a very important responsibility, especially to reach out to the most remote communities that have suffered decades of violence. For this reason the work of organisations such as La Silla Vacía, the Foundation for Freedom of Press, FLIP, and many others that make enormous efforts to report and denounce serious situations, especially in the territories, is very remarkable and deserves to be seen.”
