Kamal Mouzawak receives Prince Claus Award in Beirut

On Monday 13 February, Kamal Mouzawak received the 2016 Prince Claus Award in a ceremony organized by the Embassy of the Netherlands and Tawlet in Beirut. The celebration included speeches by Mr. Han-Maurits Schaapveld, Chargé d’Affaires of the Dutch Embassy, Mr Ghattas Khoury, Minister of Culture and Director-General of the Ministry of Tourism Ms Nada Sardouk, Mr. Henk Proepper, Chair of the Board of the Prince Claus Fund and Ms. Joumana El Zein Khoury, Director of the Prince Claus Fund.

After a warm welcome, Minister of Culture, Han-Maurits Schaapveld spoke of Kamal’s achievements, stating:  ‘Tawlet is more than a restaurant; it symbolizes how to look for the similarities behind our differences. Kamal’s passion for the Lebanese cuisine and sustainable food production has become a dynamic agency for human well-being and social development. We can rightfully call him a ‘food-visionary’. Kamal bridges ethnic, religious, political and social divisions through the shared human need and enjoyment of food.’

Henk Proepper in his speech emphasized that ‘in these unsettled days full of political turmoil in many parts of the world, it’s important to celebrate the positive, to hold on to the good, to cherish connections’, while Joumana El Zein Khoury highlighted Kamal’s contribution in food activism: ‘He has promoted small-scale and organic farming. He has revived traditions of hospitality in ways that have emphasized quality and drawn in happy visitors from far and wide, introducing them to the delights of rural Lebanon. He has inspired reconciliation and respect for disparate communities. He has highlighted the importance of protecting the environment. And he is driving social change through food movements, both locally and internationally.’

According to the 2016 Prince Claus Fund Awards Committee Report, Kamal Mouzawak is recognized for ‘inspiring reconciliation and respect between disparate communities, bridging ethnic, religious, political and social divisions through the shared human need and enjoyment of food; for preserving and promoting the rich Lebanese culinary heritage for future generations; for revitalising and fostering local food economies and sustainable organic farming in Lebanon; for emphasising the importance of rural communities and the need to develop them equally; for highlighting the need worldwide for alternatives to the globalised largescale food supply system that causes environmental degradation and public health and socio-cultural problems; and for demonstrating that what we choose to eat as our daily food has potent positive or negative impact on our lives, local communities and the environment.’
